Read hooks, bell (2013) ‘Understanding Patriarchy’

Discuss two things you learnt from the text.

bell hooks describes:

1) Patriarchy as the ‘most life-threatening social diseases sorting the mail body and spirit in our nation.’ hooks provides her own abusive upbringing as an example of this social disease.

2) ‘Patriarchy is a political social system that insist that males are inherently dominating, superior to everything and everyone deemed weak, especially females and endowed with the fight to dominate and rule over the week and to maintain the dominance through various forms of psychological terrorism and violence.’ It is not just males who should be seen as a problem of patriarchy but women who are also wedded to patriarchal thinking and actions. The crisis facing men is not a crisis of masculinity but a crisis of patriarchal masculinity. To end male pain and to respond effectively to this crisis we have to name the problem – patriarchy. The final call from hooks is that we must all change.

And one question/provocation you have about the text.

Of course there is a lot to say however my one question relates to the source and date of this article. This document can be downloaded from an anarchist website and that is not wrong in itself. However there is nothing to say from the website the date the document was published or even uploaded. Although from our assessment brief it says 2013. Therefore for me it is very difficult to contextualise the article and the points raised within it because ahistorical. There are no references included in the article. Couldn’t the tutors who set the brief have checked this out? Or am I missing something?
