AC Milan : Montella wants Witsel

June 30, 2016 in Uncategorized

Two days ago Vincenzo Montella was named as the new Milan manager after years of courting.

Today in the Italian press rumours surface that he has already singled out Belgium’s midfielder Axel Witsel to reinforce the team.

Only yesterday, a move to SSC Naples fell through after the player’s agent didn’t find the financial agreement with the South Italians.

The 27-year old has only a year left on his contract at Zenit and a €15mio price tag is required to pull him away from the club.

Given Hulk’s big-money move to Chinese side Shangai SIPG, Witsel is understood to want to follow the same exit path.13466442_10153999231617659_3985536191908974539_n

As recently as one year ago, the playmaker was close to putting pen to paper for Milan but the Russian club’s astronomical demands scuppered the deal.

However, Montella has reportedly been left impressed by the player’s mouthwatering displays with his country at Euro 2016 meaning that he wants to build his new team around him.

For the record, Milan’s CEO Adriano Galliani already attempted to sign him as a youngster from Belgian side Standard Liège in 2011, while last year he was a whisker away from securing his services.

“The player wanted to come. We also wanted him but Zenit asked too much. But I tried it all to sign him”, he said just hours after the transfer session had closed last summer leaving a vast majority of the supporters fuming.

But it’s worth remembering that unlike twelve months ago, not every Milan supporter is enthused about Witsel anymore.

Many are of the opinion that he is not an upgrade on Juraj Kucka suggesting that he lacks pace, consistency and an eye for goal.

Although if it means that his arrival excludes Riccardo Montolivo from the team sheet, the fewest would mind.

Will Witsel finally land at Milanello this summer after five years of cancelled flights?
